Checkout-only apps
Apps that run exclusively at checkout (some BNPL, fraud, accelerated payments) leave no marker on the homepage or product page, so they slip past the detectors.

Headless storefronts
Hydrogen, Remix, Next.js storefronts render server-side and don't expose the standard Shopify objects. App, theme, and pixel detection mostly won't work; the Shopify verdict still does.

Real Core Web Vitals
Speed score measures what's observable from one document fetch: TTFB, weight, script counts, third-party hosts. CWV needs a browser run with paint and layout timings. Pair with PageSpeed Insights for the full read.

Stores behind bot challenges
Cloudflare bot fight, Imperva, and similar challenges block the fetch. The scan fails cleanly with the reason; we don't try to bypass anything.

Server-side rendered widgets
Some apps inline their output into HTML with no app-attribution string. They render correctly but we can't distinguish them from native theme code.

Historical / aggregate data
Each scan is a snapshot of one URL at one moment. We don't keep a database of every Shopify store, and we don't track changes over time. If you need that, BuiltWith's market reports are the right tool.

Fetch
The local server makes one HTTPS request to the storefront's homepage and one to a product page. The same headers any browser sends. No login, no fingerprinting, no third-party services in the path.

Match
Each page's HTML is scanned against 97 app signatures plus generic detectors for Shopify app extensions and proxy paths. A signature is just a list of lowercase substrings: CDN hostnames, asset paths, distinctive class names.

Report
Every match comes back with the pattern that triggered it, the snippet of HTML around it, and the page it was found on. View source on the storefront and you'll find the same string in the same place.

Everything you need to know before you run your first scan.
01 Do you store the URLs I scan?
No. Everything runs on your machine. The local server fetches the URL you submit, runs the detectors in memory, and returns the report. Recent scans are kept only in your browser's localStorage as click-to-rerun shortcuts.
02 Does the site I scan know I scanned it?
Your local server makes a normal HTTPS request to the public storefront, the same as any web browser. You appear in their logs as one anonymous visitor with no referrer.
03 How accurate is the app detector?
It pattern-matches the homepage and one product page against 97 app signatures, plus generic detectors for Shopify app extensions and proxy paths. Apps that only run at checkout or render purely server-side may be missed. Every match shows the snippet it matched on, so you can verify.
04 Does it work on headless storefronts?
Partially. The Shopify checker and basic SEO and speed checks still run, but app, theme, and pixel detection rely on storefront markup that headless builds usually do not expose.
05 Can I add my own app to the detector?
Yes. Append an entry to signatures.js with a name, category, website, and a list of lowercase substring patterns to match in HTML. Prefer specific CDN hostnames over generic words to avoid false positives.
06 Why a score and not full Core Web Vitals?
The speed checker measures what is observable from a single document fetch: time to first byte, HTML weight, script and image counts, and third-party hosts.
